Santa Cruz, US · Full-time · $97,600 – $134,200
About this role
Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically and quietly carries passengers over congested city streets. At Joby Aviation, we've been working since 2009 to make this a reality, now in final FAA certification stages with plans to launch in the US and Dubai. We're scaling manufacturing for commercial service.
This role is an exciting position within the structures engineering team for a passionate stress engineer believing in urban air mobility's positive city impact. The engineer interfaces with many disciplines, assumes a major aircraft design role, and analyzes structures while developing load cases and certification documents.
Day-to-day involves conducting design trades and optimizations considering safety, strength, weight, and producibility. Extract finite element analysis internal loads data, perform detailed sizing, static, dynamic, damage tolerance, and modal analysis using hand calculations and FEA. Optimize composite ply stacks for weight reduction under manufacturing constraints.
Support design reviews, sign off on structural parts, oversee structural tests including planning and reports. Directly communicate with IPTs, design team, DERs, and integration teams. Gain major involvement in quick prototype designs demanding attention to detail amid scaling operations.
Requirements
- B.S. in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or another relevant discipline
- 1-2 years of demonstrated working experience in relevant industry, including internships, co-ops, academic research, or project experience
- In-depth understanding of loading scenarios, free body diagrams, and structural behavior of aircraft components
- Advanced proficiency in finite element analysis, including nonlinear static and dynamic analysis of composite structures or metallic structures
- Proficiency with CAD
- Ability to generate and review detailed analysis reports and aircraft type certification documents
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Highly proactive attitude with ability to manage multiple assignments
