About this role

This role leads test safety activities for military aerospace programs in Berkeley, MO. The engineer applies SMS, systems engineering, and industrial engineering methods to proactively identify and mitigate test-related risks to personnel and product throughout the product test life cycle.

Day-to-day work includes evaluating engineering and test plans for DFMA concepts. The engineer conducts hazard identification, risk assessment, and mitigation verification across labs like Structures, Electromagnetic, Wind Tunnel, Metrology, Environmental, and Thermodynamics.

This position requires frequent collaboration with senior leaders and a wide range of subject matter experts. The ideal candidate thrives in a multi-domain lab test environment, is operationally and applied science oriented, and has a strong propensity to solve complex challenges while learning new skills and processes.

You will be surrounded by highly motivated safety professionals and influence safety across current and future military aerospace products. The role includes leading Safety Action Groups, promoting a positive safety culture, and applying SMS principles to incident investigations.

Requirements

Ability to apply safety management system (SMS), systems engineering, and industrial engineering methodologies
Experience with hazard identification, risk assessment, safety requirements development, and mitigation verification
Proficiency in evaluating engineering and test plans for design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA) concepts
Strong collaboration skills with senior leaders and a wide range of subject matter experts
Operational and applied science orientation with a strong propensity to solve complex challenges
Systems thinking approach and in-depth understanding of test hazards
Ability to lead Safety Action Groups and promote a positive safety culture
Experience with test-related incident investigations and safety report investigations

Responsibilities

Conduct system research and analysis to identify potential, or investigate reported, in-service fleet hazards, risks, and safety concerns and quantify impact
Identify safety and mission assurance issue systemic root causes and recommend corrective actions using industry best practices
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to define, validate, and integrate safety, mission success, and airworthiness requirements; incorporate into designs, operations, and procedures
Perform or review tests, analyses, inspections, audits, and simulations to verify system meets defined safety and mission assurance requirements
Create and maintain aerospace safety and mission assurance tools and processes
Document safety analysis, hazard mitigation, validation and verification activities in compliance with relevant customer and regulatory safety standards
Develop and maintain safety and corrective action plans
Assist with demonstrating safety hazard risk mitigations and control methods to the customer and regulator
