About this role

The Starship Aerodynamics team predicts the aerodynamics and aerothermal environments that booster and ship experience during all phases of their missions. Engineers rely on engineering models, simulations, and wind-tunnel testing to deliver accurate predictions ahead of flight validation.

Day-to-day work centers on preparing, meshing, running, and post-processing CFD models while reviewing post-flight data against pre-flight estimates. The role requires a clear understanding of flow fields from subsonic through hypersonic regimes.

The team works closely with the GNC group to enable safe landing and recovery of both Starship stages. It also supports vehicle structures engineers by supplying aerodynamic inputs during design.

Aerodynamics engineers write code and scripts that share common interfaces and fit into largely automated workflows. This environment rewards precise analysis and direct contribution to flight hardware.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of experience with aerodynamic and aerothermal analysis
  • Strong background in external, compressible fluid dynamics
  • Experience with Siemens STAR-CCM+ and Java scripting
  • Experience with NASA entry-vehicle solvers such as FUN3D, Loci/CHEM, or DPLR
  • Data processing and analysis in MATLAB or Python
  • Experience with thermal protection systems

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, mesh, run, and post-process CFD models
  • Review post-flight data and compare to pre-flight estimates
  • Interface with responsible engineers to provide design inputs and explain physical phenomena
  • Write code and scripts in multiple languages that share common interfaces and support automated workflows
  • Apply understanding of subsonic through hypersonic flow fields to vehicle predictions
