About this role
Space Dynamics Laboratory seeks an Information Systems Engineer to design secure, mission-focused information systems and supporting applications for space and national security missions. This role centers on system design and architecture, not administration, translating mission needs into well-engineered designs using SDL’s procedures. Candidates shape innovative solutions across technically challenging projects.
Work with stakeholders to identify customer requirements, security obligations, and industry best practices, then translate them into well-architected designs. Understand systems through the full lifecycle from proposal to operational deployment. Evaluate architectural alternatives and produce clear engineering artifacts to guide implementation teams.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to convert requirements into complete solutions accounting for technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Serve as a subject matter expert for AWS cloud systems and peer reviewer for complex designs. Follow and assist in enhancing SDL engineering processes at the on-site North Logan, UT location.
Conduct research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards to provide technical expertise on projects and proposals. Define and implement best practices to meet or exceed mission needs. Contribute to high-impact missions through detailed outputs like system designs, network architecture, and risk management plans.
Requirements

- Experience designing secure, mission-focused information systems
- Expertise as subject matter expert for AWS cloud systems
- Knowledge of full system lifecycle from proposal through deployment
- Ability to identify and document customer requirements, security, and compliance obligations
- Proficiency in evaluating architectural alternatives and producing engineering artifacts
- Familiarity with industry best practices for information systems
Responsibilities
- Design complex, highly available information systems and support their implementation to ensure mission success
- Provide clear guidance on selecting and implementing efficient solutions for capacity, facilities, network connectivity, data storage, backup, and monitoring
- Gather and synthesize system requirements from internal and external customers, including integration needs
- Work with cross-functional teams to convert requirements into workable system solutions evaluating alternatives
- Serve as subject matter expert for AWS cloud systems
- Follow all applicable SDL engineering processes and assist in enhancing them
- Serve as peer reviewer for complex information systems designs
- Produce engineering documentation for assigned systems and solutions
