About this role
Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector seeks a Propulsion Engineer - Level 6 to support missions critical to national and global security. The role serves as Chief Engineer and Principal Investigator for the SMART development rocket motor program at Promontory, UT. This position leads evaluation and demonstration of key solid rocket motor technologies.
The engineer will act as technical lead for fast-paced annual development of new solid rocket motors. Duties include maturing SRM design, material, and processing technologies through yearly rocket motor tests. Work occurs on a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off.
You will coordinate technology advancement across Propulsion Systems functions and business units. Regular communication occurs with project leadership, other Principal Investigators, and Executive Leadership. The position requires 10% travel to advance program objectives.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a classical Engineering discipline or related closely field required with 14 years of professional experience – OR – Master’s degree with 12 years of professional experience – OR – PhD with 10 years of professional experience
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance
- Strong understanding of solid rocket motor design, manufacture, and test
- Excellent people and technical project management skills
- Experience in conducting architectural and component-level trade studies
- Strong knowledge of and ability to facilitate, coordinate and lead work across Propulsion Systems’ functions and disciplines
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to remain resilient while overcoming challenges
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Responsibilities
- Serve as Technical Lead for fast-paced annual development of new solid rocket motors
- Lead a diverse team in evaluating, maturing, and demonstrating key SRM design, material, and processing technologies through annual rocket motor tests
- Work with business development to identify and advertise SRM configurations aligned with industry needs and opportunities
- Drive technology demonstration toward onboarding to new and existing SRM programs to enhance Propulsion Systems business opportunities
- Implement an innovative vision via regular communication with the project leadership team, other Principal Investigators, functional teams, and Executive Leadership
- Coordinate technology advancement with technology leaders across NG SRM business units
