Auckland, NZ · Full-time · NZ$160,000 – NZ$240,000
About this role
Rocket Lab’s integrated analysis team contributes to the operation and development of Neutron using modelling and simulation to solve challenging problems involving dynamics, fluid flow, and thermodynamics. As a Senior Aerodynamics Engineer in the Thermofluids Analysis team, you will contribute to the analysis, design validation, and improvements of launch vehicles. Analysis is critical to guide changes and develop Neutron's capability.
Day to day, lead concept development, perform trade studies, run simulations, and evaluate performance around Neutron’s aerodynamics, heating, plume interaction, and compartment venting. You will be responsible for evaluating aerodynamic control, flow feature characterisation, and representing these by generating aero-table databases. This role involves using CFD simulations, writing code to model flow physics, and applying data analysis on flight measurements.
The Neutron team is responsible for bringing the new large rocket Neutron and its launch sites to life, from designing structures to firing Archimedes engines and setting up pads. Join a driven team tackling challenging projects and delivering on exciting missions. Rocket Lab's rockets and satellites support scientific exploration, Earth observation, and national security.
Neutron’s Electron rocket has delivered over 230 satellites to orbit while developing medium-lift reusable capabilities. Your work will make an impact on the future of space, including missions to the Moon, Mars, and components for the James Webb Space Telescope. This is your opportunity to help launch a new large rocket for the very first time.
Requirements
- Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering or similar field
- 5+ years industry experience, ideally from Aerospace, Automotive or Marine industries with aerodynamic or fluid dynamics focus
- Excellent understanding of physical principles surrounding aerodynamics, heat transfer, dynamics, internal flow
- Demonstrated experience with one or more industry standard CFD packages: Fluent, CFX, STAR-CCM+
- Experience using CFD simulations to model flow physics
- Experience applying data analysis on flight measurements to develop vehicle performance
Responsibilities
- Perform, validate, and document multi-physics analyses of launch vehicle aerodynamics
- Identify and lead implementation of changes to vehicle aerodynamic design and characterisation
- Perform trade-off studies and system design optimization
- Analyze aerodynamic performance and flight dynamics across ascent, re-entry, descent glide, and landing
- Evaluate aerodynamic control, operation envelopes, and unsteady flow features
- Represent aerodynamic characteristics through aero tables and models
- Own aerodynamic loads and environments
- Own compartment venting design and environments
