Ursa Major revolutionizes high-performance propulsion for hypersonics, solid rocket motors, satellite maneuvering, and launch to meet national security demands. As a Staff Turbomachinery Engineer, join a small talented team refining turbomachinery technology across multiple engine platforms. Own portions of the turbopump technology and report to the Manager of Turbomachinery Engineering.

Support conceptual design and development of new turbomachinery as subject matter expert in key areas. Perform design trades, preliminary design work, and analysis. Collaborate with the Turbomachinery Design team on high-performing, state-of-the-art detailed designs that are manufacturable and flight-ready.

Troubleshoot performance or reliability issues in existing Ursa Major turbomachinery using area expertise. Thrive in a fast-paced startup environment. This role offers hybrid (2-3 days per week in Berthoud, Colorado) or remote US-based options with regular travel to Colorado.

Provide active voice in engine test and development. Design and deliver propulsion systems solving urgent critical demands. Enjoy exciting challenges, supportive team, and amazing culture.

Requirements

  • 5+ years experience in turbomachinery design and development
  • 2+ years experience working with CAD software, preferably Siemens NX or PTC Creo
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, startup environment
  • Significant experience or technical expertise in one or more of: Rotor dynamics; balancing fundamentals
  • Significant experience or technical expertise in one or more of: Turbine stage aero-mechanical design
  • Significant experience or technical expertise in one or more of: Hydrodynamic design of pumps/inducers
  • Significant experience or technical expertise in one or more of: Turbomachinery detailed layout and design
  • Experience in turbomachinery related analysis software (ANSYS FEA, CFD or other specialized software)

Responsibilities

  • Own portions of the turbopump technology
  • Provide active voice in engine test and development
  • Support conceptual design and development of new turbomachinery as subject matter expert in key areas
  • Perform design trades, preliminary design work, and analysis
  • Collaborate with Turbomachinery Design team to develop high-performing state-of-the-art detailed designs that are manufacturable and flight-ready
  • Support existing Ursa Major turbomachinery to troubleshoot performance or reliability issues in areas of expertise
