About this role
York Space Systems was founded to radically improve spacecraft affordability and reliability, enabling next-generation space mission operations worldwide. The company specializes in end-to-end customer solutions, including spacecraft production, payload integration, and mission operations. We're seeking a Networking Systems Engineer Principal II to lead design, requirements management, and integration of space vehicle and constellation-level networks.
This role centers on onboard LAN architectures, inter-satellite mesh networks, and space-to-ground connectivity. It draws on skills for designing and managing enterprise-scale WANs and LANs across multiple sites, applied to a fleet of satellites. You'll ensure networking features are correctly designed, specified, and verified without writing code yourself.
Work with the mindset of a problem solver and systems thinker to debug complex issues and guide software and hardware teams. Bridge enterprise networking expertise into the space domain while interfacing with internal systems teams and external vendors. Lead efforts in a rapidly expanding innovative aerospace company.
York’s complete Space Segment Solution enables customers to leverage existing technology for rapid orbit access. Expand the team across the board in an environment valuing hands-on network design and space-based systems thinking. No space experience required, though highly valued.
Requirements
- Ability and willingness to obtain SECRET/TS clearance
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field
- 8+ years of network engineering experience (enterprise or aerospace), including WAN/LAN/WLAN, VPNs, VLANs, and virtualization
- Strong hands-on background in network design, management, and debugging
- Experience in requirements development, ICDs, and system-level trades
- Ability to bridge enterprise networking expertise into distributed, space-based networks
Responsibilities
- Design and manage space vehicle networking architectures (LANs, routing, virtualization, VPN tunneling, VLAN segmentation)
- Define and maintain requirements, CONOPS, and ICDs for onboard, inter-satellite, and space-to-ground data flows
- Apply enterprise networking principles (WAN/LAN/WLAN, VPNs, VMs, QoS) to distributed space systems
- Guide flight and ground software teams on implementing networking features (IPv6, routing, QoS, crypto integration, timing)
- Perform end-to-end latency, throughput, and QoS analyses across heterogeneous RF and optical links
- Lead integration and verification efforts across flat-sat, HWIL, EDU, and constellation testbeds
- Interface with internal systems teams and external vendors to ensure interoperability
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards and protocols (IPv6, MPLS, CCSDS, IEEE 802.3, DoD waveforms)
