Los Angeles, US · Full-time · $140,000 – $200,000

About this role

At Antares, serve as the expert on turbomachinery within the R&D team. Take ownership of the entire closed Brayton power conversion system, performing detailed mechanical design, rotordynamic/structural analysis, and testing. Ensure multi-year system reliability and manufacturability for microreactors deployable terrestrially, underwater, and in space.

Design, analyze, build, and test turbopumps for Antares reactors. Own critical turbomachinery components, collaborating closely with test, controls, and quality engineers. Perform detailed mechanical analysis on components and systems, reviewing drawings to meet life and reliability targets.

Create test schematics, CAD models of setups, and build test schedules aligned with development needs. Devise accurate models and first principles-based tools for turbopump performance and operability. Support component and assembly testing by defining configurations, execution, and reviewing results.

Lead resolution of issues during development and qualification testing. Support design improvements for turbopump assemblies, including manufacturing enhancements to reduce cost and lead time. Participate in root cause investigations from test and field operations, implementing corrective actions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or physics
  • 5+ years of experience in the design of turbomachinery
  • Experience designing assemblies and test fixtures using CAD systems
  • Experience with full system thermodynamic balances, CAD, the ANSYS suite, and fatigue/fracture analysis
  • Designed, instrumented, and conducted tests that validate systems
  • 5+ years of professional experience in the mechanical or aerospace engineering fields
  • Demonstrable experience designing, building, testing and troubleshooting mechanical systems
  • Broad knowledge of instrumentation and sensors with tradeoffs for integration into designs/test setups

Responsibilities

  • Design, analyze, build, and test turbopumps for the Antares reactors
  • Own critical turbomachinery components and work in close collaboration with test, controls, and quality engineers
  • Ensure detailed mechanical analysis is performed on all turbopump components/systems and review drawings for life and reliability targets
  • Create test schematics and CAD models of proposed test setups/facilities
  • Devise accurate and correct models and first principles-based tools to determine turbopump performance and operability
  • Build test schedules and ensure alignment with development and business needs
  • Support component and assembly testing, defining test configuration, process/execution, and reviewing results
  • Lead resolution of issues encountered with the turbopump during development/qualification testing
