Antares

Los Angeles, US · Full-time · $180,000 – $250,000

About this role

At Antares, our long-term mission is to make clean energy abundant from Earth to the Asteroid Belt. We’re fueled by advanced nuclear energy to strengthen military, solve climate crisis, and expand humanity in space. We’re building mass-producible, inherently safe, deployable microreactors for terrestrial, underwater, and space use.

As Antares’ expert on turbomachinery, you will take ownership of the entire closed Brayton power conversion system. Perform detailed mechanical design, rotordynamic/structural analysis, and testing. Ensure multiple year system reliability and manufacturability.

The R&D team hails from SpaceX, The White House, MIT, Rigetti Computing, The Air Force, General Atomics, Relativity Space, Ursa Major, Ultra Safe Nuclear, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. Antares has raised over $39M in venture capital and over $4M in government funding. Formed in 2023, the team drives innovative nuclear solutions.

You will design, analyze, build, and test turbopumps for Antares reactors. Collaborate with test, controls, and quality engineers while owning critical components. Lead issue resolution, root cause investigations, and design improvements for performance and cost reduction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or physics
  • 5+ years of experience in the design of turbomachinery
  • Experience designing assemblies and test fixtures using CAD systems
  • Experience with full system thermodynamic balances, CAD, the ANSYS suite, and fatigue/fracture analysis
  • Designed, instrumented, and conducted tests that validate systems
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills with enthusiasm for problem solving
  • Demonstrable experience designing, building, testing and troubleshooting mechanical systems
  • Broad knowledge of instrumentation and sensors for reliable integration into designs and test setups

Responsibilities

  • Design, analyze, build, and test turbopumps for the Antares reactors
  • Own critical turbomachinery components and demonstrate ownership in collaboration with test, controls, and quality engineers
  • Ensure detailed mechanical analysis on all turbopump components/systems and review drawings for life and reliability targets
  • Create test schematics and CAD models of proposed test setups/facilities
  • Devise accurate models and first principles-based tools to determine turbopump performance and operability
  • Build test schedules aligned with development and business needs
  • Support component and assembly testing, define configurations, execute processes, and review results
  • Lead resolution of issues during development/qualification testing and support design improvements
